Sx Calf Oral Electrolyte

Calf diarrhea is attributed to both infectious and non-infectious factors. Multiple enteric pathogens (e.g., viruses, bacteria, and protozoa) are involved in the development of this disease. Co-infection is frequently observed in diarrheic calves although a single primary pathogen can be the cause in some cases. The prevalence of each of pathogen and disease incidence can vary by geographical location of the farms, farm management practices, and herd size.

Sx Calf” has been shown to be very effective in helping calves rehydrate while suffering from diarrhea (scours). It differs from other electrolytes in that it appears to increase a calf’s ability to absorb fluids from its intestinal tract- not just replenish them.  Most other electrolytes rely heavily on providing more fluids to replace the fluids that are lost.  The organic compounds in Sx Calf have been shown in “in vitro” studies to have an important effect on most of the pathogens in the calf gut that cause scours.  By adjusting the microbiome and flora of a calf’s intestines, it is able to absorb fluids again.

A study conducted in 2021 by MRI, exploring the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of Sx Calf against strains of E.coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter, and Clostridioides difficile, compared to Ampicillin and gentamicin showed that the bacteria were inhibited at very low concentrations- much lower than the tested antimicrobials.

Field trials have shown dramatic reductions in calf loss during times of extreme dehydration stress and scours.

Method of administration- Sx Calf is administered undiluted at a rate 50 ml, either using a 60 ml liquid syringe or a drench gun (available through Eco Planet). Typically, results are seen very quickly (within 6-8 hours), which are indicated by a change in the calf “pinch test”, as well as observation of eyes, ears and overall energy level.  Usually, only one administration is required, but more can be used as needed.  No VFD is required for this product.

Testimonials

There have been numerous testimonials on the performance of Sx Calf.  One of them is available online through the Billings Gazette. The newspaper allows people to visit the article only a few times before a subscription is required.  The actual article wording is available.
